Southern rap was not really on the map at this point in time, since Hip-Hop was all about West Coast G-Funk and Gangsta Rap, but this album whose name I really don’t feel like typing out again really captured a certain voice and style of Hip Hop that was never in the spotlight. Southernplayalisticcadillacmusik (1994)įor a debut album, this is a smooth debut. Like I said before, the album was meant to differenciate himself from the more party rap-style Big Boi sound, showing Andre as a classier, more sensitive, and more learned man than he used to be.įavorite tracks: “Love Hater,” “Hey Ya,” “Roses”Ĥ. Naturally, this was an ambitious move on Andre’s part, and for the most part the ambition plays out very very well on this album. Naturally, I was weirded out and confused when this album started up and Andre was singing over jazz music. I remember when i first delved into Outkast’s discography, first listening to Stankonia and ATLiens before going into this one. Favorite Tracks “The Way You Move,” “Bowtie,” “Rooster,” “Tomb of the Boom.” I’m stuck in the air with weed crumbs under my cuticles” Y’all driving Subarus, stuck in your cubicles

“I’m with some nasty hoes, eating pistachios Ludacris’ part of the song will go down as one of my all time favorites in a rap song, particularly the lines: Going back to “Tomb of the Boom,” it is what ever collaboration track should be four rappers strutting their stuff with no remorse, all delivering quality verses. From the loud, blasting sounds of “Ghetto Musick” to the sex banger “The Way You Move,” to the lyrical slaughterhous that is “Tomb of the Boom,” the album is as enjoyable of a rap album as it gets. I will say right now that, while The Love Below is the way more interesting album, Speakerboxxx is the one that I keep coming back to. Speakerboxxx starts with a club banger, continues with more club bangers, and ends with a more mellow shit-talking ending. The purpose of this was likely to differenciate between the two rappers’ styles even more so, with Big Boi being the “player” who raps about southern life, pimping, and shit-talking, and Andre being the eloquent, poetic one who raps about love, hate, and sometimes even delves into social issues. This is Outkast’s “pop music” album, which is also a double solo album, with Speakerboxxx being the Big Boi album and The Love Below being the Andre 3000 album. Thankfully, every other Outkast album is a lot more focused than this one.įavorite Tracks: “Mighty O,” “Hollywood Divorce,” “PJ and Rooster,” “Morris Brown.” In short, it’s like this album was a bunch of bonus features for a soundtrack we never got in full.
#Atliens outkast album cover high resolution movie
The song “Call the Law,” a song that is supposed to be about his character from the movie’s marital troubles, is not in the movie, which means that it is wasted on this album, whose listeners might have never seen the movie and might not know what is going on in the song or care. His stuff on this album is far beyond phoning it in, though, which helps raise the quality of the songs up above adequacy.īig Boi’s stuff on it is pretty good, too, it’s just I have to go back to the movie again. There is no “Roses” or “Hey Ya ” no standout tracks that elevate the style beyond expectations. Hell, the movie even plays songs from Speakerboxxx which seems strange to me since they seemed to have recorded a lot of decent stuff for this album.Īndre seems to play with more of the jazzy, blues-themed singing stuff like in The Love Below, except not to the effectiveness of The Love Below. It also brings to mind one of the problems with the movie itself which is that it has all of these songs from the album that is supposedly the soundtrack, but in reality there is very little in the way of music in the movie.

While it is not a bad album from any stretch of the imagination, at least in my humble opinion, it is a goddamn unfocused mess of different sounds. This is Idlewild, an album that is part soundtrack to Outkast’s movie of the same title. This list was really hard for me to make. Outkast is one of my all-time favorite Hip-Hop groups and they have one of the best Hip-Hop discographies you could look for. Since this is the month of my birthday, I want to cover the discographies of one of my favorite artists.
